Short answer: Most Ottawa homes should clean their gutters twice a year: once in late spring after the trees drop their seeds, and once in late fall after the leaves are down but before the freeze, usually early to mid-November. Homes under tall maples, oaks or pines may need three or four cleanings. Professional gutter cleaning costs about $110–$983, averaging around $366.
Gutters (or eavestroughs, as most Canadians call them) are easy to forget until water pours over the edge in a rainstorm or a row of icicles appears along the roofline. In Ottawa's climate, clogged eavestroughs are more than a nuisance: they are one of the most common causes of ice dams, wet basements and rotting fascia boards.
The short schedule
| When | Why |
|---|---|
| Late May to June | Maple "helicopter" seeds, catkins and spring debris settle in gutters after the thaw |
| Late October to mid-November | Leaves are down; gutters must be clear before water freezes in them |
| Extra visits | Homes under big trees, pine needles, or after a major windstorm |
Ottawa's mature neighbourhoods — the Glebe, Rockcliffe Park, Westboro, older parts of Nepean and Manotick — have big canopy trees, and many homes there benefit from a third cleaning in early fall. Newer subdivisions in Barrhaven, Kanata or Orléans with young trees can often stay at twice a year.
Why fall timing matters so much in Ottawa
The late-fall cleaning is the one you should never skip. Here is what happens when it is missed:
- Leaves fill the trough and block the downspout.
- Rain and melting snow sit in the gutter instead of draining.
- When the temperature drops, that water freezes solid.
- Snow melting on a warm roof runs down, hits the frozen gutter and refreezes, building an ice dam.
- Water backs up under the shingles and leaks into the attic, walls or ceilings.
Ottawa's frequent freeze–thaw swings in December, March and early April make this cycle worse. A clean, free-flowing gutter is the first line of defence.
The trees that fill Ottawa gutters fastest
Not all trees are equal when it comes to clogged eavestroughs:
- Maples are everywhere in Ottawa. In spring they drop clusters of winged "helicopter" seeds that pack tightly into gutters and sprout if left in place. In fall, their large leaves mat together and block downspouts quickly.
- Oaks drop leaves late — some hang on into November — so homes under oaks often need a final clean-out later than their neighbours.
- Pines and spruces shed needles all year. Needles slip through many gutter guards and form a dense mat that holds water.
- Willows, poplars and cottonwoods release catkins and fluffy seeds in late spring that clog screens and downspout openings.
- Elms and lindens drop small seeds and flowers in early summer that add to the spring load.
If several of these overhang your roof, plan on three cleanings a year: late spring, early fall and a final visit once the last leaves are down. A quick look from the ground with binoculars after a windy day will tell you a lot.
Signs your gutters need cleaning now
- Water spills over the edge during rain instead of running out of the downspout
- Gutters sag or pull away from the fascia
- Plants or moss are growing in the trough
- Streaks or stains on the siding below the gutter
- Pooling water or soil erosion near the foundation
- Damp patches in the basement after heavy rain
- Birds or insects nesting along the roofline
- Long icicles along one section of the roof in winter
What happens if you don't clean your gutters
- Basement leaks. Overflowing water lands right next to the foundation. Downspouts should discharge at least six feet (about 2 m) away from the house.
- Ice dams and roof leaks in winter, as described above.
- Rotting fascia and soffits. Wood behind constantly wet gutters breaks down.
- Gutter damage. A trough full of wet leaves and ice is heavy enough to bend hangers and pull gutters off the house.
- Landscaping and walkway damage. Overflow carves channels in garden beds and creates icy patches on walkways.
Doing it yourself: safety first
If you have a single-storey home and you are comfortable on a ladder, cleaning gutters yourself is doable. Follow these rules:
- Use a sturdy extension ladder with stabiliser arms; never lean the ladder on the gutter itself.
- Keep three points of contact and never overreach — move the ladder instead.
- Have someone hold the ladder.
- Wear gloves; gutters hide sharp screws and metal edges.
- Scoop debris into a bucket hooked to the ladder, then flush the trough and downspout with a garden hose.
- Never go up in wet, icy or windy conditions, and stay well away from power lines.
For two-storey homes, steep roofs or anyone uncomfortable on a ladder, call a professional. A fall from a second-storey roofline is a serious injury risk.
Do gutter guards mean you never clean again?
No. Gutter guards and screens reduce how often you need cleaning, but small debris, pine needles and roof granules still get through or sit on top of the guard. Most guarded gutters still need an inspection and clean-out at least once a year.

Frequently asked questions
Is once a year enough for gutter cleaning in Ottawa?
Only if there are no trees near your roof. Most Ottawa homes have trees nearby and need a spring and a fall cleaning.
When is too late for fall gutter cleaning?
Once gutters are frozen or under snow, cleaning becomes difficult and unsafe. Aim to finish by mid-November, after most leaves are down.
Do you repair gutters or install guards?
No. BlueGuard cleans gutters and flushes downspouts. If we spot loose hangers or damage, we note it in your photo report so you can contact a gutter installer.
Do you clean gutters outside Ottawa?
Yes. We serve Ottawa, Nepean, Kanata, Manotick, Orléans and all our other service areas, including Gatineau, Durham Region, Montréal and Eastern Ontario.
